Gaelscoil an Mhuilinn hosts array of world sport ‘stars’

You’d be forgiven for thinking the likes of Davy Fitzgerald or José Mourinho made a visit to Gaelscoil an Mhuilinn on Thursday week last.

In was, in fact, Conor Moore, aka Conor Sketches, who was there to present the girls and boys of the Gaelscoil with new jerseys as both football teams have progressed to the semi-finals of Cumann na mBunscol this year.

There was great excitement as Conor arrived in a packed assembly hall. Calling his cousin Rogan Ó Móra to the stage, Conor put their children through the paces on the morning, making sure they were fit for next year, all the while giving a running commentary throughout keepy-uppies and push-ups!

Principal Caroline Mhic Róibín explains: “We needed school jerseys badly as we haven’t had new jerseys in years. I put the feelers out to see if anyone was interested in sponsoring them, and we very kindly got a message from Conor to say he would sponsor the kit.

“We were delighted, we couldn’t believe it when we heard that he was willing to do that for us. Conor Sketches will be emblazoned across the front and we’re very excited about it.

“We play a lot of sport in the school, Gaelic football for boys and girls, camogie and hurling, so they’ll get great use from them. I’m delighted to say that both the boys and the girls football teams have progressed to the semi-finals of Cumann na mBunscol this year,” says Caroline.

“Cumann na mBunscol hurling and camogie will be starting after Christmas and the new jerseys will be in full use.”

Conor’s visit was the start of a very busy day at Gaelscoil an Mhuilinn, where children from Rang a Dó up to Rang a Sé were rehearsing for their Christmas concert that same evening.

Irish music teacher Enda Seery was putting the children through their paces for the musical display, while the annual raffle had everyone in high spirits.

Earlier in the week, the infants and Rang a hAon presented their Scéil na Nollaig “as only infants can do in their own inimitable way,” says the principal. Meanwhile, the Gaelscoil’s carol singers had a busy couple of weeks, making an appearance at the Christmas Markets and at Tesco in the run-up to the Christmas holidays.

“The excitement has just been at fever pitch all week,” says Caroline. “They’re all very excited for Christmas and we’re all looking to finishing up for the holidays,” she said.
