Increased supports for workers imminent – Burke

Legislation that will introduce further supports for businesses and workers who have been negatively affected by the COVID-19 virus is being worked on day and night, Deputy Peter Burke has said today.

Burke, whose office is still operational although closed to the public, has said that the government recognises that €203 is insufficient to support people through this difficult time.

He says this amount was an emergency payment put in place as an interim measure when thousands of businesses were forced to close down overnight: “Last week, the Minister for Employment Affairs and Social Protection provided a one-page form which could be downloaded online and any person could receive a payment without having to visit an Intreo Office or provide a Public Service Card or any documentation.

“This accessible process was necessary to provide a speedy payment to tide people over from their previous pay cheques.

“As the week progressed, it became clearer that unfortunately businesses, schools and workplaces may not be in a position to re-open as early as previously anticipated.

“While banks have agreed to provide mortgage and loan breaks for customers, people need more support at this time in order to pay bills and have some sort of security for their families in the coming weeks and months.

“Many businesses wanted to pro-actively top up the €203 payment and contacted me on this matter. I am glad that this will be facilitated in the legislation being brought forward.

“We must commend businesses for this and encourage more to do so where possible.

“I have spoken to the Minister for Social Protection, as well as Minister Donohoe and the head of the Banking and Payments Federation, Brian Hayes. This is one of the most critical times in modern society and full support must be given to our citizens to ensure they can make every possible effort to stay at home and contain this pandemic.”

Deputy Burke said he is glad that measures are being considered which may see the government provide people with a set portion of the salary they were previously receiving before the pandemic broke.

“This portion, along with mortgage and loan holidays, would see many restored to the financial position they were in earlier this year. I am pushing for this approach and have lobbied government colleagues in recent days on this.

“For those still struggling, the community welfare officer may make supplementary welfare payments directly. Anyone who needs advice on income supports can call 01 2481398 or 1890 800024 – alternatively phone my office on 044938 5044 and we can inquire on your behalf and assist with any forms that you might need help with.

“This will become a defining time in our history and it is vital that the government is responsive to the needs of the people.

“These measures will be costly, but this cost will be balanced with the health and welfare of our people at this time.

“I continue to advise people of all age groups to stay at home where possible and please contact your GP if you feel you have symptoms. My office is available to assist people at all times so please reach out if you have any queries or unmet need.”
