2KM from home website readying for new surge with new 20km limit on June 8

The very evening the Taoiseach announced that exercise should be taken only within 2kms of where we live, the web app 2kmfromhome.com went live.

Built and released on March 27 by David Bolger from Devhaus, a Wexford based software development company, it’s now been updated in anticipation of the expected announcement on June 8 that we can travel to within 20kms of our homes.

The latest update allows users to place two pins on the map showing people the overlapping 20km areas where they can meet up for socially distant visits or exercise.

Since its March 27 launch, the site has seen up to 15,000 people using the website simultaneously and in total over 2.1 million people have used the site 6.2 million times to see where they can exercise.

The site creators expect another massive surge when the 20km limit goes live.

The website is free to use but there is a button where they can buy the creators a cup of coffee.

“So far we’ve had 121 cups of coffee bought for us which is enough caffeine to keep us

powered for a good few weeks that would include some very long nights of coding,” said Mr Bolger.

The initial site was built for family and friends and hosted on a small Devhaus project server, due to the high traffic levels the site was migrated to a larger server and eventually to Cloud Flare to scale content delivery. The site remained live throughout these transitions.

The site has been shared extensively across all the social media platforms, with 50% of the traffic coming from WhatsApp groups and shared on social media by TD’s, Senators, County Councils and sports and fitness clubs.
