The new mayor of the Municipal District of Mullingar and Kinnegad has urged people to shop local to help businesses recover from the impact of the lockdown.
Cllr Bill Collentine (FF) was selected at the first public meeting of the municipal district since the Covid-19 crisis began in March.
Speaking after being selected to replace outgoing mayor, Cllr Mick Dollard, Cllr Collentine said that as Ireland enters the second phase of the reopening process after lockdown, it’s important that people support local shops and service providers.
“We must also be very conscious of the effects Covid-19 has had on businesses. The days ahead will not be easy and I want to assure businesses that this council will not be found wanting, we will be flexible and supportive as you get back on your feet.
“Our businesses will only survive with our support, so let’s all make sure we shop local and ensue the future survival of our town.”
Cllr Collentine offered his condolences to the families of people who died due to Covid-19 and also paid tribute to the frontline and essential workers for their efforts over the last three months.
“We salute and give thanks to all who work on the front line, nurses, doctors, gardai, people working in our essential shops – pharmacists, carers, volunteers, our defence forces both permanent and reserve, Civil Defence, and our own staff in Westmeath County Council.
“It is at times like this we see the very best of the Irish community and nowhere better than Mullingar to display it.”
Cllr Andrew Duncan (FG) was selected to replace outgoing deputy mayor, Cllr Hazel Smyth of the Green Party.
Cllr Duncan also stressed the importance of supporting local businesses in the months ahead.
