Jack Charlton - gone but fondly remembered

Jack Charlton in Mullingar on Saturday October 13 1990 to officially open the new Avonmore Home and Farm Superstore at The Green in Mullingar – and as this photo shows an immense crowd turned up to see him.

The man who captured the affection of an entire nation, and became regarded as a national treasure of our own, the former football manager Jack Charlton has passed to his eternal reward.

Jack, who managed the Irish football team from 1985 to 1995, fired the imagination of the nation as he got the team through the qualification process for two World Cups and a European Championships, died in his sleep yesterday, July 10.

He was loved in this country, and he loved it back.

He was a great raconteur, a passionate angler and an all-round good guy.

Ní bheidh a leithéid ann arís.
