The auction for the lands in Slanestown comprising 103 acres was a resounding success.
The auction was held in Shandonagh GAA grounds by kind permission of the committee of the club, and both the DNG Duncan team and the Wyse family are grateful for the use of the premises over the course of the week.
The room broke out into a spontaneous round of applause as auctioneer Andrew Duncan dropped the hammer - after nine individuals had made more than 50 bids - to bring a drama-filled sale to a conclusion.
Mr Duncan, a third generation auctioneer whose father and grandfather disposed of some of the finest agricultural holdings in Westmeath over many generations, was very pleased with the result on the day.
He said: “We have a longstanding and proud history in the land market in the county, and we are delighted to once again become an active player in this area of the market, offering an added dimension to our clients with cutting edge marketing and advanced online technology which is fast becoming an important tool in maximising the price achieved for all property.”
The land quality and its proximity to Mullingar, combined with a derelict dwelling, led to a strong demand on the day, concluding with a final bid of €865,000.

Auction of Grange land
Bidding at the auction for Grange farm was considerably more subdued, but nonetheless was brought to a successful conclusion when the hammer fell to a neighbouring landholder for €950,000.
The land was of mixed quality and despite its proximity to Mullingar, its potential viability as a development site seemed to be dampened somewhat in light of enquires to the relevant planning authorities by several would-be developers.
Nevertheless, the auctioneers were pleased with the result.
Mr Duncan said: “We now have a considerable database of potential customers for good quality agricultural land of various sizes and we are actively looking for replacement properties for strong cash buyers.”
