Mullingar Soroptimists get new president
Soroptimists were delighted to finally hold their 2020 AGM and elect Anne Melly as their new president.
Without doubt, it is a big change for members to be now having their meetings virtually, but as meetings go on, all are getting more used to the new format.
On being elected as the new president, Anne thanked the members for embracing the move to the virtual format as without their willingness to give it a try there couldn’t be an AGM, and the event was well attended.
In her address, Anne said while she was honoured to be elected president. Knowing that she is continuing the work of the fantastic previous presidents, she is apprehensive as she faces a big challenge in the year ahead.
Many of the activities the club undertakes each year involve face to face interaction and that will be limited for the forcible future. Anne said her first priority is to keep the friendship and connectivity between club members.
Members have supported each other since the start of the Covid-19 pandemic and the safety of the members will always be the priority.
Friendship is at the heart of being a Soroptimist and this shone through in the restricted times.
Anne also spoke on the fundraising that Soroptimists have done year on year – she said that the charity organisations the Soroptiomists support need financial support more than ever, and Mullingar and District will be creative and work hard to raise some funds to support those in need.
Another area of concern Anne highlighted is the increase in violence against women during Covid-19.
“These are areas where we must dig deep, find creative ways and stay connected to give our support at this challenging time,” said Anne.
Members all wish Anne the very best of success in her year ahead.
