Tóibín wants action to stop boy racers in Castlepollard

A local TD is worried about the activities of “boy racers” in Castlepollard and wants the council to do something about it.

Peadar Tóibín, Meath West TD, says residents in the area have contacted him regarding their concerns about speeding on the major roads around Castlepollard.

He is calling for swift action from Westmeath County Council to assist with the problem.

Deputy Tóibín said: “It was brought to my attention that large numbers of motorists are exceeding the 50km speed limit on a regular basis on all five major roads in and out of Castlepollard.

“Residents have expressed serious concern that this ongoing issue could possibly result in a road fatality."

“I have been in contact with the garda station at Castlepollard, and officers there echoed similar concerns, and are aware that speeding is a serious matter in the area, particularly the issue of “boy racing” around Collinstown Road.

“They welcome any assistance to help them to deal with the problem effectively as they have limited numbers of gardaí based at the station to police the area – one garda sergeant and four gardaí, only two of whom are available to cover twelve hour shifts”.

Deputy Tóibín added “I have been in contact with Westmeath County Council requesting that a traffic survey be carried out as a matter of urgency on the roads around the town with a view to putting in place any traffic calming measures deemed necessary to deal with this issue efficiently.

"I have requested a immediate response and will be monitoring this issue carefully,” he concluded.
