Local actor Niamh Algar has been nominated for a BAFTA.
The Mullingar native have been nominated in the Best Supporting Actress category for her performance as Ursula in the drama Calm With Horses.
Her co-star in the film Barry Keoghan has received a nomination for Best Supporting Actor. Directed by British director Nick Rowland and shot in Galway and Clare, Calm With Horses has been nominated in the Outstanding British Film category.
Algar's fellow nominees in the Best Support Actress category are Kosar Ali for her performance in Rocks, Maria Bakalova, (Borat 2), Dominique Fishback, (Judas and the Black Messiah), Ashley Madekwe (CountyLines) and Yuh-Jung Youn (Minari).
She has already tasted awards success for her performance in Calm With Horses, winning the Best Supporting Actress category at the IFTAs last October, where she also won the Best Actress award for her role as Dinah in the TV drama The Virtues.
We are only a few months in 2021, but it is already shaping up to be another year to remember for Algar. Last month it was announced that she had been cast alongside the iconic English performer Charlotte Rampling in the upcoming drama, Mooring.
The film tells the story of single mother Megan (played by Algar) and her son Charlie, who live on a barge. Rampling's character, Eve Hertford, leads a reclusive existence and is estranged from her son. She enters Megan and Charlie's lives when their barge becomes beached on her property.
Referring to her new project with Rampling, Algar tweeted that she was “honoured to be working with this acting powerhouse”.
The winners of this year's BAFTAs will be announced at a ceremony without an audience on April 11.
