Mullingar Tidy Towns get funding for Brosna project

Mullingar Tidy Towns have confirmed that funding for their River Brosna Heritage Trail has been approved by the Local Water Authority Programme Community Water Development Fund.

Chairperson of Mullingar Tidy Towns, Bill Collentine, said: “This is fantastic news for Mullingar Tidy Towns – with this funding we are in a position to deliver our vision for the beautiful River Brosna, which has much wonderful history, unknown to many, and which flow through our town on its way to its final destination, the River Shannon.

“Our vision will be to erect information boards at six locations in the town, where viewing can be accessible to all. Each sign will have historical details about that location, and all signs will direct those interested to the locations of the other signs.

“Future information will be made available in the coming weeks and we hope to have the trail fully completed by June 2021.”

Historical information is provided by Sean Doran of Doran Signs, who manufactured these information boards.

It includes the history of the fish associated with the River Brosna in Mullingar and other important facts about the river – provided by local fisherman Andy Boyle, who said he is delighted to help with this project.

Mullingar Tidy Towns would like to offer special thanks to the Local Water Authority Fund for backing the project, Westmeath County Council for permission to erect the information boards, Mr Doran for making the boards and for his historical information, and also Mr Boyle for his expertise on the Brosna and the stories he has from his experience of fishing on the river.
