Moyvore makes the map as settlement most distant from Irish coast
When the seas rise and Ireland floods, we may all find ourselves rushing for safety to Moyvore!
A team of mapping experts has this week determined that the village is Ireland’s most distant settlement from the coast.
On a blazing hot summer’s day, 91km may seem like a long distance – but spare your sympathies and extend them instead to the residents of Narovchatka, in Russia who would need to plan well in advance if they fancied a day at the seaside, since their nearest beach is 1,55km away.
The town in Britain that is deepest inland is Fillongley in Warwickshire, which is 120km from the coast.
The map, drawn up by the team at Landgeist.com last week set about calculating which settlement in every country in Europe was furthest from the sea.
These they termed "the inhabited pole of inaccessibility".
And, they explained, determining this can depend on what definition of a coastline you use:
"First of all, where the sea meets the land constantly changes because of the tides. Then there are other problems, like where does a river exactly meet the sea? How about tidal rivers? How about tidal plains?"
Their end calculation for Ireland was probably inevitably going to wind up in Westmeath.
But at least, even if we don’t have beaches, we are "The Lake County" after all!
