Inspiring young local writer with special needs launches her first children’s book

Every day during lockdown, Orla Keating walked along the Royal Canal in Mullingar. Inspired by her daily walks, she decided to enter a writing competition run by the Local Authority Waters Programme.

The story that resulted has been published as a children’s book, Orla and the GoFaster Stick, which will be launched in Mullingar on Tuesday October 5 by Orla and the Minister of State with responsibility for Disability, Ms Anne Rabbitte, TD, (Department of Children Equality, Disability, Integration and Youth).

The book tells the story of Orla meeting her friends and family as she walks along the Royal Canal – they all want to use her GoFaster stick as something else… but all Orla wants to do is continue her walk!

Orla has always had an interest in writing, having written poems and stories over the years. Her accomplishments are all the greater as Orla has Down syndrome and special needs. Orla hopes her book will inspire others to write stories.

"I am happy and proud of myself and hope that my book makes everyone happy," she says.

Minister Anne Rabbitte said that "Orla's simple writing style points to a young lady with great insights. Her wonderful imagination draws the reader in and creates a remarkable read for children."

The book was one of the winners in the Stories from the Waterside competition. According to Alan Walsh of the Local Authority Waters Programme:

“This is a fantastic achievement and well done to Orla and you all on an amazing journey with this book."

The book is beautifully printed by Triest Press in Roscommon, a social enterprise which provides employment to people with learning disabilities.

All proceeds from the book will be donated to the Longford Westmeath Branch of Down Syndrome Ireland.

The launch of Orla’s book will take place on Tuesday October 5 at 7pm in the Band Hall, Mullingar and will comply with public health guidelines.
