There has been an increase in traffic levels through Clonmore, councillors say.

'Huge increase' in Clonmore traffic

A “huge increase” in traffic at Clonmore Industrial Estate is worrying local councillors, who voiced their concern at the October meeting of the Municipal District of Mullingar Kinnegad. Cllr Andrew Duncan asked that the council examine the heavy traffic flow and difficulties with traffic entering and leaving businesses.

Cllr Ken Glynn, who works in the area, reported that since town centre works were completed, the traffic flow has increased significantly.

Two new schools opening in the area has added to the traffic. He complained of cars driving over footpaths to avoid traffic lights. The mayor, Cllr Aoife Davitt, said she had seen that happen and she agreed “wholeheartedly”.

Pat Keating, director of services, pointed out that the aim of the enhancement was to divert traffic away from the town centre and said if there is more traffic, it would suggest that the businesses are successful.

However, he said that the council would look at the issues raised.
