First female worker-director of Bord na Móna appointed

An Offaly Bord na Móna employee has made history by being appointed as the first-ever female worker-director at the company.

Sinéad Culleton-Lowry, who joined Bord na Móna in 1989 as a Canteen Attendant, has been named as the newest worker-director to the Board, and the first-ever female to work in this role.

She will now work alongside her fellow Board members, and will be responsible for overseeing the implementation of Bord na Móna’s strategy to ensure the long-term success of the business.

After joining Bord na Móna in 1989 as a Canteen Attendant in Boora, Sinead Culleton-Lowry was subsequently appointed as Canteen Manager at the Blackwater site, where she worked for almost four years, before returning to Boora. She has also served as a Shop Steward and Assistant Secretary on the Boora SIPTU Committee.

Congratulating Sinéad Culleton-Lowry on her appointment, Tom Donnellan, CEO said; “Sinéad’s appointment reflects our commitment to creating a more diverse, equal and inclusive workforce in Bord na Móna. I look forward to working with Sinead, who will bring a new depth of employee experience to the Board as we continue to develop and grow our climate solutions business”.

In 2020 Bord na Móna launched a €126m Peatland Climate Action Scheme, which will harness the natural power of peatlands to secure a store of over 100m tonnes of carbon in perpetuity, cut emissions, and capture millions of tonnes more in the coming years. The company is also raising €1.6billion to fund a series of major climate focused projects across its 200,000 acre landholding. By 2030, Bord na Móna will be able to supply a third of Irish homes with renewable energy.

80% of all Bord na Móna’s operations is now focused on renewable energy production, recycling, peatland rehabilitation, and sustainable product development.
