New Year Q&A - Johnny Cronin
1. What are your stand-out memories from 2021?
Olga and I having a baby son, Daniel. The best moment of my whole life, not just this year! Music-wise, playing with Steve Wickham of The Waterboys in Ballinamuck for a live record out next year. And then just last week, we recorded The Simon Community Busk (which was broadcast on YouTube on Christmas Eve) and played Dirty Old Town with Shane McGowan and busked Running to Stand Still with Bono, Glen Hansard, Damien Rice and more.
2. Are there any changes in our ‘new normal’ that you feel are worth keeping?
More time with family and friends and exploring what’s on our doorstep. So many hidden gems. We are lucky where we live in the heart of Ireland.
3. Best film or TV series you saw in 2021 – and why?
Films: Rumble Fish, Nomadland, Father, In a Quiet place, Another Round, Aretha Franklin Respect, Oasis Knebworth, Shane McGowan Crock Of Gold, Sparks Documentary. I’m big into music films. Series-wise I love Ackerly Bridge, Succession and The Beatles Get Back on Disney was a real revelation. A look behind the curtain of the greatest band that ever was. It makes you want to start a band again and play music.
4. Where did you holiday in 2021 – and why did you choose there?
We didn’t this year with the baby on the way, and by the time things opened up, it was too close to the due date.
5. What hopes do you have for 2022?
For us all to be safe, strong and healthy. For us to get back to work gigging in Europe. Put out a new record and write some songs that connect. Peace, love and understanding to all.
