History maker Leona is "only getting started"
Leona Maguire confirmed her undoubted quality as she won the Drive On Championship in Florida.
Having already announced her arrival on the world stage with her majestic performance at last year's Solheim Cup, the west Cavan star this weekend became the first Irish winner on the LPGA Tour.
Negotiating difficult windy conditions more frequently found at the Slieve Russell Golf Course than in Florida, Leona topped the final leaderboard on -18 Leona. She finished up with three shots over second placed Alexis Thompson. The consistency of Leona's play over the course of the weekend was reflected on her scorecards with read 66, 65, and 67 over the three rounds.
The commentator succinctly summed it up when he greeted Leona's final putt with the line: "It's a first for Ireland and the first of many for Leona Maguire - an LPGA champion for the first time."
Reacting to the win, Leona tweeted: "Dreamt about this moment for a long time and we’re only getting started 🇮🇪🏆 Couldn’t have done it without the help of my incredible team & family 💚 ."
In addition to lifting the cup, Leona was also awarded a winner's cheque worth $225,000.
