CASTLEPOLLARD HURLING CLUB

AGM

Castlepollard hurling club held their AGM on Sunday the 30th of January in the upstairs meeting room of the new complex building. The meeting was officially opened by the secretary Patrick McCabe.

The president of the club Donie Cassidy led prayers for all club members who passed away since the beginning of the covid. He gave a special mention to two former chairmen John Dermody and Ned Flynn who died during the year.

Donie also recalled the dark cloud that was over the club in recent times with the tragic death of Shane Gilchrist who was a current member of the senior hurling team and Brendan Burke who was on the 1965 and 1966 county championship winning teams.

The secretary Patrick McCabe thanked all for coming and delivered the secretary’s report. He highlighted how it was a terrific year for the development of the club with the building of the new complex which consists of two dressing rooms, a referee’s room, kitchenette, upstairs meeting room and gym, as well as the new fully lit Astro turn training pitch. He commented on the 2021 hurling league proceedings for both senior and junior teams.

He continued to talk about the senior championship and how the win against Clonkill for the first time in 16 years led to a last round decider between Castlepollard and Castletown Geoghegan, with Castletown victorious on the day.

The secretary thanked the management team of Alfie Devine, Ollie Devine, Darren Nea, PJ Ryan, David Kennedy and the backroom team for their sacrifice and commitment to the team over the last number of years.

The Chairman Brian McCabe gave his address and highlighted the great efforts of all who helped and contributed to the new complex building. He thanked the builders and trades men who worked to complete the fine building and Astro turf pitch. The treasure Seamus Sheridan gave his financial report for the year. The election of officers took place and any motions that needed to be voted on.

KILBEGGAN SHAMROCKS

AGM

There was a good-sized attendance at our socially distanced AGM which took place in the GP Room in Scoil an Chlochair last Sunday night.

Members took the opportunity to reflect on the year while also looking ahead to 2022. In his address, chairman Ken Scally thanked his fellow committee members for their dedication, Nicky Finn for overseeing the running of our all-weather facility with help of Maurice Colton and Pat Lynagh, as well as our sponsors, including main sponsor Ronan McCarthy of the M6 Service Station.

He also acknowledged the great work of the underage committee and mentors. In particular, he thanked outgoing underage chairman Fergal Fox for his efforts and wished Martina Rochford and Sabrina Nannery well in their new roles as underage chairperson and secretary respectively.

Admitting that the pandemic made the past two years very difficult, Ken expressed the hope that the intermediate team would kick on this year under Paddy Malynn, who is entering his second season as manager.

“We stayed up last year which was the main thing,” he said.

“If we had won our first championship game against Tubberclair, it could have been a different story. It’s going to be very tight again, but the aim has to be to come out of the group.”

Marie Lynagh presented an excellent secretary's report in which she also challenged the team to raise the bar.

“While it was important for us to maintain our intermediate status, one would hope that 2022 will lead to a quarter-final position rather than a relegation battle!” she stated.

“Paddy Malynn and his backroom team, apart from Keith Gorry, will be staying in place. I wish them the very best of luck for the year ahead.”

Detailed reports on ladies football and underage activities were also presented, while treasurer Martin Dowdall's report showed the club to be in a healthy state financially. The weekly lotto, the Astroturf facility, Mel Kiernan’s ‘Last Man Standing Competition’ and a very successful 1000 Mile Challenge over the May Bank Holiday weekend provided the main revenue streams in 2021. It was also noted that the Astroturf facility has now been fully paid for.

Shamrocks’ Under 15s versus Clane

Mullingar Shamrocks’ under 15 side had their first outing of the year on Sunday morning with Clane the visitors to Springfield. Our under 15s have been busy early in the season with a number of training sessions already completed and the hard work on Wednesdays and Sundays showed signs of paying off last Sunday as the home side produced a good display in a competitive outing.

Naturally there were lots of mistakes as early season cobwebs were dusted away but the endeavour by all twenty players on duty was wholehearted and honest and that was the most pleasing aspect for the management team of Oliver Keating, Barry Maguire, Matt Ledwith and Barry Kelly.

Tommy Daly, showing no ill effects from his recent enforced lay off, was in scoring form while at the other end of the field Ben Sheerin and Ronan Byrne were aggressive in their tackling and made life difficult for the visiting Lilywhites.

Tommy Idowu and Andrew Opala showed no signs of fatigue after their successful efforts in the Leinster basketball final with St Finian’s on Friday and Ty Masterson’s work rate in tandem with Criostóir Ormsby ensured a plentiful supply of possession to the Shamrocks’ forwards.

All twenty players saw plenty of action and it was great to see James Flynn in attendance after his recent injury. Thanks to the Clane lads for travelling. Strength and Conditioning training for this group continues this week on Tuesday on the Astro at 4.45 and training on the main pitch continues on Sunday at 11.00. Thanks to Robbie Cornally for the whistling duties.

The Shamrocks’ line out was as follows: Adam Buckley, Dillon Burke, Paul Keating, Tommy Idowu, Ben Sheerin, Liam Heffernan, Rory McCaul, Criostoir Ormsby, Ted Aherne, Tommy Daly, Jack Toal, Ruairi Kilmartin, Charlie Foy, Ronan Byrne, Tommy Daly, Andrew Opala, Ben McNamee, Isaac Haughey, Padraig Casey and Ty Masterson.

Saturday Morning Return to action

Shamrocks’ Saturday morning training sessions for boys and girls aged between 4 and 11 will resume on Saturday 5th March in Springfield. The previous Saturday, 26th February, sees the club holding its Information Afternoon in the clubhouse in Springfield between 1-3, an ideal chance to find out more about what makes the Saturday sessions so much fun. Further information to follow with starting times for each group.

ST JOSEPH’S GAA

Welcome to new Senior Management Team

St Josephs GAA are delighted to announce that our management team for the Senior team has been in place over the past couple of weeks and with the season commencing next week, the time is apt to announce those who are in charge for 2022.

We welcome Declan Mullally from Portarlington in as team Manager for this season. Declan has managed a number of sides in Laois in recent years and is new to the Westmeath club scene and we are certainly delighted that he has taken the reins. The former Gracefield and O’Dempseys player will bring a different view and we do wish him the very best of luck.

Joining Declan as selectors are our own Daire Lynam and Eoin Carberry from neighbours Rosemount. Daire has had a long career with St Josephs and played up to last season winning a JFC in 2004 and Eoin who is out injured this year has come on board with a good knowledge of most of our players so overall it is an interesting set up and hopefully it will be a successful season for all concerned.

Opening League game v Tubberclair

St Josephs open our Division 5 league campaign with a match against Tubberclair on Saturday 19th February at 5pm in Tubberclair. With a shortened league in 2020 and 2021 due to Covid restrictions, it is great to see a normal league season commencing again.

In 2019 we finished third in this Division losing out on head to head for a top two spot which would have gained us promotion. There is no guarantee on anything but it is a tough opener next weekend. Last time we met in the Divison, we edged it by 3-10 to 2-10.

Scór na nÓg

Scór na nÓg is resuming on the first weekend in March after being in hiatus for the past two years. St Josephs hope to enter but it will be difficult as the time scale is very short to get people involved. If anyone has an interest in participating, then please contact the club secretary Aidan Walsh as soon as possible.

Mentors Meeting

A mentors meeting for underage teams is due to be held on Thursday 17th February at 8pm in the Horseleap Streamstown Community Centre. Registration night for teams will be decided at that meeting but is likely to be on the weekend of 26/27th February.

PRO Required!

At our AGM in December, the position of PRO was left vacant and it is an important one where the news and views from our club are put together on a regular basis to keep our supporters and friends informed of what is going on. If anyone has an interest within our club structure in doing this, please contact club secretary at secretary.stjosephs.westmeath@gaa.ie

ST LOMAN’S, MULLINGAR

Senior Management

The club is delighted to announce the Senior Management team for the 2022 campaign.

Declan Kelly will continue as Manager. Declan has had huge success since joining St Loman’s Mullingar, guiding the club to back to back championships in 2020 and 2021. Remarkably, in between all this, Declan was in charge of the 2021 Offaly U20 All Ireland winning team, the Faithful County’s first U20 crown since 1988. Offaly beat Dublin, Cork and Roscommon on way to victory.

Garret Hickey continues his role as selector after a successful 2021 campaign. Garret has played a vital role in all our championship winning campaigns since the 2013 success.

Jonathan Plunkett returns to the role of selector after being involved in the management team for the successful 2020 winning championship. Jonathan was a club stalwart on the pitch for many years and since retiring has coached at all levels within the club.

Niall Spain joins the set up as selector. Niall, now living in Mullingar, is a native of Co. Offaly and has represented his county at underage and senior grades, he also lined out for London while living in the UK. Niall has connections to the club and we extend a very warm welcome to him.

Backroom team: Alan Bracken continues on statistics while Gary Devine and Paul Devine remain on Team Logistics duty. Best of luck to players and management in the season ahead!

Finally many thanks to Ciaran Kilmurray and Gary Glennon who have taken a step back from their roles. Their hard work and dedication in the management team, Ciaran (2020 and 2021) and Gary (2021) is greatly appreciated by all in the club.

ST PAUL’S, CLONMELLON

Club lotto

Our club lotto continues this week with the draw taking place down at Bingo in the Clonmellon Community Centre every Monday night. Currently the jackpot is €1,500 and tickets for the draw costing just €2 can be bought locally in Leonards Shop, off any of our committee members, at Bingo on Monday night or you can play online by simply searching for St Pauls GFC Clonmellon under the "Find my club" tab on www.clubforce.com.

It's never been so important to keep a few Euros coming in the door so please support our Club Lotto if you can. After Covid-19, fundraising is proving very difficult and many of our fundraising events could not go ahead so your support of our Lotto is very much appreciated.

There was no winner of the Club's Lotto Jackpot last Monday night with the numbers drawn as follows: 5, 9, 17 and 26. The €20 lucky dip winners were Ciara Garry, Annette Reilly, Ray Martin and Croia Atkinson - well done to all.

Club AGM

The club will hold its Annual General Meeting this coming Friday February 18th at 7pm in the local Community Centre where a review of 2021 and our plans for 2022 will be heard.

The club AGM is a very important meeting so we are asking all players, parents, supporters etc to attend on the night so that you can have your say on all aspects of the club. We are always on the lookout for new members to join our committee, so if you are interested in coming on board please contact our secretary Marie on 086 0530539 before Friday.

Junior Footballers get their season underway

Our junior footballers will be hoping to make a winning start to the 2022 season when they welcome The Downs to Clonmellon for the opening round of the league this coming Sunday morning with a throw-in time of 11:30am. Your support on the day would be appreciated so please join us if you can.

Club grounds opening for walking

As part of the Ireland Lights Up campaign for the Operation Transformation series on TV which urges people to get up on their feet and exercise, our club grounds will remain open every Tuesday and Thursday evening from 7-9pm for anyone who wants to use it.

‘Little Pauls’ Nursery returns

Our boys Under 7 football and Under 5 ‘Little Pauls’ Academy is back and runs every Saturday morning from 11am to 12noon down on our all weather Astro Pitch. The theme of these outdoor sessions will be teaching the kids the basic ABC's of Gaelic Football - Agility, Balance and Coordination and all in a fun and safe environment.

So if you have a boy born in 2015 or 2016 or 2017 why not bring them along for a great hour of fun and exercise. There may be people who have suitable children for this but who may not be too familiar with the club or know what we are about so please spread the word.

Great news

Our club received some great news last week that we were approved for a Sports Capital Grant of €67,000. This funding will go towards the next phase of the ongoing development of our club grounds. A big thank you to our committee members who worked on the grant application back in 2020 to help get it over the line.

Fundraising and Club Development

The club received confirmation this week that we are to receive almost €84,000 from the Governments Sports Capital Grant. This is very welcome news and we thank the awardees for this. We have a lot to do on the development and a lot more funds to raise but this gives us a great start.

The club would like to remind members and the local community of the leaflet which was distributed throughout the village recently. This is very important as it outlines how people can assist the club to progress the development of the pitch. Much needed fundraising needs to now be carried out. We thank everyone in the community for their support.

Green Clubs

The club was delighted to receive its certificate from An Gaisce - Bulbs for Bees. This was a youth led initiative where the club received bulbs for Bees to plant. It is awarded to Youth organisations who expressed their interest in being more involved with biodiversity and protecting our pollinators.

Tyrrellspass GAA is committed to improving the clubs relationship with biodiversity and have established a committee to assist with this.

Sponsorship

The club would like to thank our sponsors Mark Wright Total health Pharmacy, and Bethany House for all their ongoing support. We would also like to invite new sponsors. We are a club that is ever growing and needs as much support as we can. Please contact the club secretary if interested.
