Applications for Green Kilometre scheme sought

Community groups are encouraged to join in the Green Kilometre scheme which was successful in Westmeath last year and runs again this year. They can register with the scheme on greenKM@westmeathcoco.ie.

This issue was raised by Cllr John Shaw at the February meeting of Mullingar Kinnegad Municipal District, when he asked that the council continue to engage with community groups on it.

He asked that the council reach out to groups that were involved last year and reward all that take part through grant aid and awards. When community leaders get involved, others will follow, he suggested.

Cllr Hazel Smyth agreed that those who make the effort to keep their areas clean should be recognised. She said that groups should be asked to consider planting trees and wildflowers in their areas.

Cllr Ken Glynn also endorsed the rewards scheme idea, suggesting even a monetary boost for groups who engage. He said Westmeath was the second county in Ireland to launch the scheme and it has spanned out from rural areas, to towns and estates too.

The mayor of Mullingar district, Cllr Aoife Davitt, remarked that some areas had put up Green Kilometre signs, which were a deterrent to people who might litter. Cllr Denis Leonard agreed that if you see your neighbours, young and old, out cleaning your road, you are less likely to litter.
