Delvin man elected Uachtarán of Ógra Fianna Fáil
A Delvin man was elected Uachtarán of Ógra Fianna Fáil at the organistaion’s youth conference in Dungloe, County Donegal at the weekend.
Niall Gaffney (25) is a barrister working both in Dublin and the Midland Circuit.
In his maiden speech to the delegates of the organisation, at the banquet dinner on Saturday night, Niall outlined the direction he wants to take the organisation, saying that Ógra Fianna Fáil can lead the way in bringing about real change.
“The voice of the youth has never been louder, and together, we can ensure that our voices are heard!
“We must never forget it was visionary, idealistic and committed young people who founded Fianna Fáil, under the leadership of Eamon de Valera in 1926. And it was young people who first encompassed the ideals of a united Ireland, social and economic advancement, and equal opportunities for all.”
Niall called for greater supports for renters, particularly students and young professionals, as young people are caught in the “rent trap” by moving to cities and towns to pursue an education, training or post-graduate employment for short or medium terms.
During those years, young people often face extortionate rents and high costs of living.
Fianna Fáil have introduced significant measures to assist people with buying or building their first homes and young people will benefit massively from that policy, said Niall.
However, greater assistance and attention for renters is something that Niall says will stay central in Ógra’s representations to the Senior Party in ensuring fair and affordable housing for all.
