Mullingar immunologist working on nasal Covid vaccine
A scientist from Mullingar is helping to develop a nasal Covid1-19 vaccine.
Kingston Mills, Professor of Experimental Immunology at Trinity College Dublin, says that although that there is still a lot of work to do, he is hopeful that the Covid nasal vaccine will prevent transmission in much the same way as the nasal flu vaccine does.
“Rather than injecting the vaccines, we and some other groups have shown that being immunised in the nose, where the infection starts, generates a local immunity there and this stops the virus in its tracks.
“This is probably going to be the way forward, administering vaccines by the nasal route. Some of the manufacturers who are making the existing vaccines are looking at this as well,” he told Midlands 103.
