Loss of Harbour Street car park 'won't significantly affect council'
The loss of the Harbour Street car park in Mullingar is not likely to significantly affect Westmeath County Council, a meeting of the Mullingar Kinnegad Municipal District has been told.
In reply to a motion from Cllr Mick Dollard, it was stated that the car park which was rented by the council, has been sold, and the site is to be developed.
Income from paid parking continues to be affected by Covid and has only recovered to 82% of pre-pandemic levels.
In 2019 and 2020, the Harbour Street car park brought in €1,849 and €13,849 respectively. A deficit of €4,651was recorded last year.
There are about 1,500 car parking spaces in Mullingar, which is deemed adequate to absorb the reduction in available car parking spaces at that location and retain any associated income that may have been generated.
