Midlands boxer Lisa O'Rourke wins gold at world championships
The midlands has a champion of the world, after Lisa O'Rourke earned gold at the IBA Women's World Boxing Championships in Istanbul today.
It's a sensational achievement for the 20-year-old from Castlerea, who defeated Mozambique's Helena Alcinda Panguane on a 4-1 majority decision in today's final.
It was one of two Irish gold medals on a memorable day for the sport in this country, with Amy Broadhurst winning her 60-63kg final shortly before O'Rourke climbed through the ropes for the 66-70kg decider.
Prior to today, Katie Taylor and Kellie Harrington were the only Irish female boxers to have taken home gold medals from the world championships.
