Explore Joyce's Mullingar with Ruth Illingworth
Tour guide and historian Ruth Illingworth enthusiastically embraces the annual celebration of Bloomsday, and this year again she is organising a tour of Mullingar.
Titled ‘James Joyce’s Mullingar’, it takes place on Bloomsday, Thursday June 16, at 7pm, from The Greville Arms Hotel; (adults €5, children free).
Ruth says: "In 1900 and 1901, James Joyce visited Mullingar, and he never forgot the town. To mark Bloomsday and the 100th anniversary of the publication of Ulysses, this tour will explore the Mullingar of James Joyce.
"The novelist lived in the town for a number of weeks in 1900 and 1901, while his father did work for the county council.
"Mullingar features in his novels, Ulysses and Stephen Hero.
"Places visited on the tour will include the Joyce Mural in Mount Street, the Greville Arms and the location of the photo business in which Millie Bloom worked.
"The tour will also include readings from Joyce’s works."
