Tribute: the late Brendan Fagan, Patrick Street, Mullingar
One of the first children Baptised in the Cathedral of Christ the King, Mullingar, and one of the oldest residents of Patrick Street, Mullingar, Brendan Fagan, has died.
Brendan was a familiar face on the streets of the town, where he regularly walked his beloved dog, a terrier who died just a week before his master.
Brendan worked as a member of the kitchen staff at St Loman’s Hospital, Mullingar, for 30 years. He had many amusing stories to tell about his working career and was fondly remembered by the staff for his dedication, hard work and sense of humour.
He was rarely sick or missed a day at work, despite cycling in from Killucan in all weathers.
As head of the family, Brendan devoted his life to helping raise his 10 nieces and nephews, to whom his courage and strength in the face of adversity were an example.
He had a great love of animals and he and his beloved dog will be sadly missed on the streets of Mullingar, where Brendan had a smile and a greeting for everyone he met.
A true gentleman, Brendan had great faith and his faith helped him through difficult times. It saddened him that he was the last remaining member of his family in Patrick Street, but he maintained a sunny disposition throughout.
Brendan passed away peacefully at the Midland Regional Hospital, Mullingar on June 28. He is deeply missed and fondly remembered by his nephews and nieces Brendan, Gerry, Ann, Seamus, Noreen, Peter, Teresa, David, Maureen and Eamon, relatives, many friends and neighbours and his former colleagues of St Loman’s Hospital.
Brendan’s removal was on Thursday, from Shaw’s Funeral Home, Bishops Gate Street, Mullingar, to the Cathedral of Christ the King, for funeral Mass, on Friday, followed by burial in Ballyglass cemetery.
