Westmeath Community Games County Track and Field Finals
The 50th Westmeath Community Games Track and Field Athletics events were at the Mullingar Harriers grounds on Sunday 26 June saw. It was 2019 since Westmeath Community games last lined up there and we were delighted to partner with Mullingar Harriers at their fantastic new all-weather track.
Brave volunteers were on hand to assist with marking and setting up the track and grounds despite the wet conditions on the Saturday for the expected 400 competitors and 600 supporters.
The Sunday was a day of mixed offerings and we were lucky to get the opening ceremony and first race off before the rain. The opening ceremony torch bearers who completed a round on the new track were Oisin McGrath (The Downs), Oscar Casey (Castledaly), Ella Brady (Coole-Whitehall), and Orlagh Hanratty (Streete-Rathowen).
Reading out the Community Games Pledge in English, Ciara Wiseman (Multyfarnham) and in Irish Jennifer Campbell (Gainstown-Milltownpass), followed with Lauren Finan (Castleday) confidently singing the national anthem, so with the torch ablaze we were ready to start
The U8 girls 60m sprint got the day off to a great start. For most, it was their first competitive race and cheered on by the crowd all safely made it over the finishing line.
With excellent organisation in the call area and with all experienced stewards on duty for the day, they quickly moved through the programme and got all events on the schedule across the finish lines with all the races ran off without a hitch. The weather proved a real test for some competitors but true to the Community Games ethos, they braved the rain and competed with pride and determination for their areas and families.
The field activities commenced after the hurdles and like the track events, with expert judges and the participants fully aware and complying with regulations, all the activities were ran off in a safe and professional manner.
Like last year and in a new format like last year which follows guidance from Sport Ireland and other national governing bodies, a regional event will take place. First, second, third and fourth winners in track from the county finals in Mullingar Harriers qualify to represent County Westmeath at the regional finals on Saturday July 30 at Clones Athletics Track, Monaghan.
The winners and second placed competitors only in the field events from county finals will go straight to national finals on August 13 in Carlow. The winners only from county relay finals will also go straight to the national Community Games finals on August 13 in Carlow.
After a successful county T&F finals, we would like to thank all the participants and their parents. Thank you to Mullingar Harriers for the use of their track and grounds, and their volunteers. Thank you also to Westmeath Civil Defence for their continuous support of our games, stewards for assisting with traffic management and Westmeath County Council for their support. Thank you to all the area Community Games volunteers, coordinators Emily Wallace and co-ordinator and MC on the day Sean Liston with assistance from Kevin Matthews and staff for sound. An event of this scale does not take place without a hard-working team in the background supporting county events.

Westmeath Community Games County Team Finals 2022
U12 and U14 Girls Gaelic Teams
Congratulations to both the U12 and U14 Drumraney Tang Community Games girls teams on a great win on Friday evening, 24 June against Ferbane, Offaly. The games were played at Tang GAA in the Leinster quarter-final double header. Well done to both teams and management.
U12 Boys Soccer Team
Congratulations to Athlone East Community on a great win on Saturday 25 June against Tullamore in their quarter-final. The Westmeath U12 boys soccer team won their match against a good Tullamore team in challenging conditions. Both teams took time to settle down with strong winds and rain. Athlone East had wind advantage in first half but found it difficult to find the net.
Tullamore had a few chances but thanks to some good saves from Athlone East goalkeeper, Tullamore were unable to get on the score board. Before half-time the Westmeath team got the break and scored their first goal.
With a wind advantage Tullamore came all out early in the second half to get an early equaliser, but thanks to some great defending Athlone East kept a clean sheet and with some good attacking play created a number of chances. The Tullamore goalkeeper saved several shots but could not prevent the second goal coming midway through the half and with five minutes to go Athlone East got their third goal of the match.
It was a great all round team performance and the team and management are looking forward to playing the semi finals. These will be held in Longford on the 24 July. Best of luck to team and management in the semis.
Westmeath Community Games County Art and Culture Finals 2022
Last Saturday 2 July, boys and girls from around Westmeath travelled to St Cremin’s NS, Multyfarnham, to take part in the 2022 Community Games County Final in Art and Culture.
Areas represented included Athlone East, The Downs, Coole-Whitehall, Rochfortbridge and the children competed in activities including art, model making, handwriting, solo singing, dancing, and music performance with the participants ranging in age from 8 up to 16.
The day would not have happened without the help and commitment of Westmeath Community Games Committee along with volunteers and judges from around the county not least from Multyfarnham, who took on the huge task of hosting this event, with the last Art County final taking place in 2019 in Athlone.
While art has been a popular event at Community Games, we are delighted to see the introduction of cultural events like recitation, music, and dance. We encourage Community Games areas to facilitate young people next year to take part in culture events to show case their talent. Who knows there maybe a new Sharon Shannon or Dermot Kennedy among us?
Children and parents received a warm welcome from the Multyfarnham committee extending great hospitality at their local school. Winners on the day will go forward to represent Westmeath at the Community Games National Finals this August in Carlow.

Chairperson Emily Wallace paid tribute to all Westmeath competitors, parents and our volunteers, “It has been a hectic few weeks for the county and area committees which had to be affiliated to national and get events organised for 2022 in a short time frame after Covid.
“Children all over Westmeath have big dreams, and just being here and having fun is our main aim, It’s not at all about winning – it’s about making memories and making friends. Our aim in Westmeath Community Games is to have as many children in the county as possible have the opportunity to take part and represent their area and hopefully County.
“We have been contacted by many parents on seeing the children taking part over the last few weeks, disappointed that their area was unable to take part in time for 2022. But we will help and guide any area not in a position to have a committee together for this year to set up to take part in the games for 2023 – please keep an eye on our Facebook page this coming Autumn when we will be in a position to help new areas prepare for 2023.
We wish all our competitors and families well as they prepare for regional and national finals. Go neirigh leo.”
