Rumble strips at Kilpatrick Bridge 'too noisy', say council
A claim that rumble strips would not be appropriate at Kilpatrick Bridge, Mullingar, because they would be too noisy, was challenged by Cllr Aoife Davitt at the July meeting of the Municipal District.
She had asked that the rumble strips be provided to warn motorists of cyclists and walkers crossing the bridge to join the walking trail and as a safety measure for traffic. She was told that the area was inspected and found to have ample warning signs.
Cllr Davitt claimed that lorries and cars are using this road to cross from the Lynn Road to the Ballymahon Road. Cyclists and walkers have to cross and it is not safe.
She argued that there are no houses, or residents, near the bridge that would be affected by the noise from rumble strips and besides, there are rumble strips next to houses just down the road at Ballinea school .
David Jones, director of services, said that the noise would have a general impact on the area, day and night and rumble strips were not an option. However, he said they could look at other measures that might be more appropriate.
Cllr Davitt also called for safety works in D’Alton Park, Mullingar - additional car parking spaces adjacent to a particular property and the widening of the road at the initial bend.
She was told that there are no safety works included in this year’s budget for that location, but councillors have approved €20,000 for footpath works.
Mr Jones said Cllr Davitt’s request could be considered in the 2023 estimates.
