Mullingar karate star impresses at British knockdown tournament
Dimitar Stoyanov and his coach at Mullingar Kyokushinkai Karate Club, Ken Fitzpatrick, represented their club and country recently at the British Open Knockdown Karate Championships in London.
Dimitar got to the final and fought a very capable Norwegian opponent in the U18 Lightweight category (-68kg). Dimitar won in the first round with a well-timed and accurate body punch shortly after both fighters had exchanged powerful punch and kick techniques. His opponent was unable to regain a standing position within five seconds and Dimitar was declared the winner by knockdown full-point decision.
The talented Cadet fighter travels from Cavan every Saturday to train at the Mullingar dojo based at the Parish Community Centre. The club also trains on Tuesdays.
