Ryan rules Troy’s call for feasibility study on dual rail line ‘premature’
A study on whether a dual railway between Mullingar and Maynooth would be both economically feasible and justified has been raised by Deputy Robert Troy.
Deputy Troy raised the subject recently with the Green Party leader and Transport Minister, Eamonn Ryan, requesting that the minister ask Irish Rail to carry out a feasibility study.
The minister explained that in the context of the Strategic Rail Review currently under way, it would be “premature” to examine just this issue.
Minister Ryan said that the Strategic Rail Review, which is being undertaken in co-operation with the Department for Infrastructure in Northern Ireland, will inform the development of the railway sector on the island of Ireland over the coming decades.
“He stated that the review is considering the future of the rail network with regard to improving sustainable connectivity between the major cities – including the potential for higher/high-speed,” Deputy Troy told the Westmeath Examiner.
“The review is also to look at enhancing regional accessibility, supporting balanced regional development and rail connectivity to our international gateways. This also includes the role of rail freight.”
Stating that he welcomed the review, Deputy Troy said he understands the team undertaking the review have also been tasked with considering the scope for improved rail services and infrastructure along the various existing, or potential future, corridors of the network including disused and closed lines.
“Minister Ryan said that the government has previously stated its belief in the potential of rail,” said Deputy Troy.
“He stated that it is vital that constraints in the rail sector be addressed and a strategy delivered that allows rail to fulfil its potential as a sustainable mode of transport in pursuit of decarbonisation priorities, rural connectivity objectives and as a generator of prosperity for people across Ireland.”
A draft report from the review team is anticipated before the end of this year, and Minister Ryan said in advance of the review concluding, it would be premature to request that Iarnród Éireann conducts a feasibility study on double tracking of the line between Mullingar and Maynooth.
