Wilson's hold early lead to midlands take regional title
U16 Girls Midlands C Regional Final - Wilson’s Hospital School 46; Heywood Community School 35
The Wilson’s U16 Girls basketball team who won the Midlands C Regional Final on Thursday last had the support of a strong contingent of supporters from their school making their voices heard in the National Basketball Arena and.
Led by captain Sophie Glennon, Wilson’s got off to a dominant start, led from the throw-in, and built up an early lead in the opening quarter, as they got into their flow.
Their physicality in defence proved a big factor early on as Diana Izekor, Eabha O’Mahony and Sophie Glennon held off the Heywood offence, while the agility and speed of Clara Tomaszek and Manuela Albasanz Pina cut through the opposition at will.
It was a lead Wilson’s would hold throughout the game as they kept Heywood at arm’s length for the rest of the second half.
There was notable strength in depth as team coach, Ms Beirne rotated through her squad keeping fresh legs on court, which maintained the Wilson’s intensity.
MVP: With her constant energy to drive at the Heywood defence to get scores or draw fouls, Clara is the MVP. Congratulations to the squad and their coach and good luck as they move to the national qualification games.
