Tractor run and bake sale in Castletown Geoghegan
A theft in the parish of Castletown Geoghegan led to a event that showed the strength of the community spirit in the area when a tractor run took place on December 18 last.
Speaking to the Westmeath Examiner on the day, Fr Barry Condron said: “We’re here because of an idea that a local man, Brendan Reynolds, came up with, following the theft of oil from our church here, St Michael’s.
“Brendan worked with a few friends and neighbours and organised this tractor run to raise funds to put up new protective fencing around the tanks and to fill them with oil.
“We’re very grateful to him, and the team, it’s a huge saving on the parish.
“During the week we had the bell in the church fixed and the works for that were donated by Martin Hogg, another parishioner.
"There’s a wonderful community spirit here in Castletown Geoghegan, and it’s great to see it, especially at this time of the year. Everyone is coming together to help out the church and to do what needs to be done, and we’re delighted at the huge turnout.”
Fr Condron thanked all the people that turned out for the tractor run. “There’s a sea of volunteers, inside and outside – those that prepared the cake sale, people serving tea and soup, and the people that came in this bad weather for the tractor run, all the farmers and others that have come out in huge numbers here. We’re delighted to see them.”
He also thanked the committee, the stewards “and everyone that has come together, and if I’m forgetting anyone, I apologise”.
