Glory Days: Archive footage captures Westmeath U21's All Ireland win in 1999

Archive footage has been shared this week of one of Westmeath GAA's greatest days, when the county's under-21 footballers defeated Kerry in the All Ireland final in 1999.

The KillianM2 TV Archive, which digitises old video footage, shared a clip on Twitter of the jubilant scenes at the final whistle as Luke Dempsey's men toppled the Kingdom on a scoreline of 12 points to 9 in Limerick:

The complete RTÉ coverage of the game has also been shared and is available to view on the Killian M2 Archive blog here.

The Kerry under-21 team which Westmeath defeated was managed by the current manager of the Kerry senior footballers, Jack O'Connor, and includes players who went on to star for the seniors, such as Tomás Ó Sé, Tadhg Kennelly and Paul Galvin.

The Westmeath team included the current senior manager, Dessie Dolan, along with a host of talented players who helped secure a first-ever Leinster championship for the county at senior level five years later.

The Lake County had huge support in Limerick, with RTÉ commentator Ger Canning suggesting at the outset that the Westmeath fans "must be outnumbering Kerry by about ten to one".
