Ryan to speak at Green Party public meeting in Columb Barracks

Green Party leader Eamon Ryan will be the main speaker at a public meeting in Columb Barracks this Thursday evening (January 19) at 7.30pm.

Longford Westmeath Green Party says that Minister Ryan will “address the challenges facing us as a result of climate change and the urgent need to decarbonise our society, as well as the opportunities offered by the transition to a low-carbon economy” and “..will outline the progress made to date and share the Green Party plans for the future”.

Other speakers at the meeting, which will be MC'ed by Noel Kinahan and hosted by Cllr Hazel Smyth, will include Cllr Louise Heavin, who will talk about the Active Travel Programme, and Ken MacPherson, who will discuss the opportunities provided by public transport in decarbonising our transport sector.

Local businessman Thomas Flynn will talk about the rapid innovations being made in renewable energy, while Dr Isabella Donnelly of the Sustainable Energy Authority of Ireland will talk about the community energy projects that are making a huge contribution to Ireland’s renewable energy targets.

Caroline Lawlor, Project Manager of FarmPeat, will explain the role that our peatlands and bogs can play in a decarbonised economy, while Helen Donnolly / Jack O’Sullivan will outline the future of Columb Barracks and the important role it will play in generating renewable energy. In addition, John Smith of the horticulture college at Belvedere House and Gardens will outline the important role trees and biodiversity play in our move towards decarbonisation.

Cllr Smyth says that the evening “promises to be informative and insightful with the focus on how we can take positive steps towards making Mullingar a decarbonised town in accordance with its designation as Westmeath’s Decarbonisation Zone”.

“Attendance is a must for anyone with an interest in ensuring the decarbonisation of our economy and making the most of the opportunities offered by the Just Transition,” she said.
