Ruth leads tour of train station this afternoon
Ruth Illingworth conducts a history tour of Mullingar Railway Station today, Sunday January 29 at 3pm.
Ruth has huge knowledge of the history of Mullingar and Westmeath and has a unique way of conveying it on her tours.
She said: "Mullingar station is considered to be one of the finest examples of Victorian railway architecture in Ireland. In the late 19th century it was described as being 'almost the very focus of the whole rail network in Ireland'.
"This year marks the 175th anniversary of the arrival of the first train in Mullingar.
"The tour will explore the rich history and heritage of the station including the important part played by the station in the social and economic life of the town; the role of railway staff in the War of Independence and the sensational murder of the Stationmaster in 1869."
If you would like to join the tour, meet at the main door of the station at 3pm today. The cost for adults is €5; children are free.
