The North Midlands Credit Union hosted a huge group of competitors and their families for the Primary Schools Quiz in Mullingar Park Hotel on Monday January 30 last.
One of the biggest events in the credit union calendar, the quiz was back this year after a hiatus due to Covid-19, and the organising team, led by Yvonne McHugh and Denise Garry said it was “fantastic to have our schools quiz back in person but also to have the huge turnout of students, parents, and teachers that we had been accustomed to pre-Covid”.
Due to now having 72 primary schools in the North Midlands Credit Union common bond area, and with space constraints in venues, it was necessary to hold two quizzes on separate nights.
The first was on Friday January 27 in Longford and the second was on Monday January 30 in Mullingar Park Hotel.
There was a total of 39 schools in the Mullingar Park Hotel, made up of 64 teams and 256 students taking part. The quiz was to a high standard and all schools did exceptionally well, said Yvonne and Denise.
There were two categories – Competition A, for students under 11 years of age; and Competition B, for students under 13 years of age.
Competition A, in first place, St Mary’s National School, Raharney; joint second place, St Colmcille’s National School, Gainstown, Gaelscoil An Mhuilinn, Scoil Croí Naofa, Rochfortbridge, and St Patrick’s National School, Ballinagore.
Competition B, in first place, St Colman’s National School, Mullingar; in second place, Holy Family National School, third, St Patrick’s National School, Ballinagore.
The quiz in Longford had 18 schools taking part, made up of 31 teams with 124 students taking part. The winner of Competition A was Melview National School, Longford, second was St Mary’s Primary School, Edgeworthstown and in third was St Mel’s National School, Ardagh.
The winner of Competition B was St Teresa’s National School, Killoe, second was Colehill NS, and in joint third place were Melview NS, and St Mel’s NS, Ardagh. The winners of Competitions A and B in both quizzes progress to the next round in the hope of making it to the all-Ireland national final.
“A big thanks to all the parents and teachers for their continued support,” said Yvonne and Denise.
