St Finian’s TYs present Oklahoma!

By Gerard Greene, TY student, St Finian’s College

This year’s TY students at St Finian’s College are putting all their energy, time and effort into the final musical preparations for their show, Oklahoma!, which is being staged next week.

There is fantastic casting, pristine choreography and unbelievable energy, and it promises to be colourful and musically powerful. It is an absolute must-see, performance.

This production of Oklahoma! the Rodgers and Hammerstein classic, is led by TY year head, Mr Andrews, Mr Connell (musical director) and Ms Jones (producer).

Everything's Up to Date in Kansas City, (from left) Tadhg Kelly, Aisling Harte, Sean Tully, Catherine Fallon, Aaron Smith, Katie Gannon, Max Quinn, Dervla Buckley and Abbie McCormack.

It is based on Lynn Riggs’s play, Green Grow the Lilacs, about settlers in rugged Oklahoma territory in 1906, shortly before it became a state in the union.

The story is about a love triangle with complicated undertones. It follows the cocky and confident protagonist, Curly McLain, who is seeking the affection of the sweet and kind-hearted Laurey Williams, competing against the dark character of Jud Fry as they approach the Box Social Dance.

What makes this love triangle so intriguing is that Jud Fry is undesirable, and the dynamics push the audience to the edge of their seats in anticipation.

They've gone about as far as they can go! (Kansas City) From left, James Sugrue, Kevin Horan, Ben Shanahan, Rian Fitzsimons, Shane Govan, Daniel Cunningham, Mark Fulham, Seán Tully, Tadhg Kelly, Max Quinn and Abbie McCormack.

There is another love triangle too, but it is played more for comedic purposes to calm the tension of the main one. The characters are Ado Annie, Will Parker and Ali Hakim, and it does a good job of making the audience smile.

Supporting it all is the fantastic score, including such iconic songs as Oh, What A Beautiful Morning, Many a New Day and Kansas City.

Audiences will find themselves bobbing their heads to the tunes without realising it.

It is a show you have to see for yourself to appreciate.

Tickets are on sale at St Finian’s College for the available dates, March Thursday 2, Friday March 3 and Saturday March 4. Doors open at 7pm and the show begins at 7.30pm.
