Lorraine goes through a ‘hair raising experience’ for LARCC

In what she has been described as a “hair raising” experience, Lorraine Murphy from Multyfarnham had her head shaved as a fundraiser for LARCC on Saturday evening last, April 1 – no joke!

“I did it to support my husband David, who is receiving cancer treatment at the moment, as well as a lot of people in our area going through the same,” Lorraine told the Westmeath Examiner.

“I want to support LARCC because they’re a brilliant charity, and they’re on our own doorstep – it’s a fantastic service and it’s brilliant to have it,” said Lorraine, who many will know from her time working in Whelehans Pharmacy, Mullingar.

“I just felt I had to do something, and I wanted to do something a little bit different that might grab people’s attention.

“I decided I wanted to do it – my hair grows like lightning anyway, and at my age I don’t care. It’s my choice and some people don’t have the choice. My friend, Brigid Maxwell, did the honours.

“I’ve had great support from everyone locally, all my friends and neighbours, a neighbour and friend who’s an artist, Tricia Waldron, donated a picture for auction, so it’s been brilliant. And local lads supply the music, and everyone who’s donated here tonight, I’d just like to say a big thank you to everyone.”

Lorraine added further thanks on Sunday evening: she said the night was brilliant and she was delighted with the attendance and support.

“The fundraiser is going beyond my expectations, but my head is cold!” By Sunday night, the funds raised had reached more than €4000, and more was coming in. Lorraine added:

“Thank you to all the amazing, generous people involved. I have thanked people on different forums, but any appreciation can not be underestimated in any way.

“I just lost my hair – the real heroes are the donors of money and raffle prizes, people’s time. “Thank you also to the fabulous singers and musicians, who created an amazing atmosphere for the whole night; the pub who hosted the event, Conor and Suzanne Murtagh; the friends, family, neighbours and the whole of the brilliant Multyfarnham community.”
