Emotional victory for Kiernans at Castletown-Geoghegan Point-to-Point

There were jubilant and moving scenes at the Castletown Geoghegan Point to Point last Sunday when the Frank Kiernan Memorial Cup was won by Cappajune Lady, trained by Frankie’s daughter Heather.

The Mark Davies owned nine-year-old Cappajune Lady was ridden by Eoghan Finnegan to a five and a half length victory.

Emotions soared again when Heather almost recorded her first ever double with Shaffrey’s Hill being pipped at the post in the Brosna Paints older geldings’ maiden. Shaffrey’s Hill is owned by Heather’s mother, Ita, and was the last horse bred by Frankie before his untimely demise.

Speaking after the races, Heather, who is also the fixtures point to point secretary, said that it was wonderful to win the cup that is presented in memory of her father.

"The two horses running so well was fantastic and Cappajune Lady winning the cup and then to watch Shaffrey’s Hill come so close also, made it a truly memorable day”, Heather remarked.

The Kiernan family has been an intricate part of the Castletown Point to Point for many years.
