History and music at Áras an Mhuilinn
There is good news for fans of traditional music and culture as Áras an Mhuilinn have a busy schedule in the coming weeks. Last Wednesday, June 7, two initiatives began: one was the first of a series of history talks, this one by Ruth Illingworth.
Her well-researched talk traced the history of traditional music in the midlands, from the great historic assemblies at such places as the Hill of Uisneach to the first Fleadh Cheoil in Mullingar in 1951. Future talks will deal with the growth and development of Comhaltas and fleadhanna and other aspects of traditional music and culture generally.
The talk was followed by the first Seisiun an tSamhraidh for 2023. A fine group of local musicians, both young and old, provided the very receptive audience with the best of music song and dance
This Wednesday night, June 14, Dr Tom Hunt will commence his series of talks by outlining the foundation and development of the GAA in the midlands in the early days.
As with all of Tom’s work, it will be well-researched and interesting. Seisiun an tSamhraidh will continue with more great entertainment, and, gan amhras, there will be the cupán tae agus cáca milis, no rud eigin mar sin.
Proceedings commence at 7.15pm.
