Garda bitten twice by suspect

A male Garda in Mullingar required medical treatment after he was bitten twice at the garda station in Mullingar last week.

The assaults happened as the garda arrested the man, an Irish national, in connection with alleged public order breaches.

The incident happened at 2pm on Tuesday June 20, and it is expected that the suspect will be charged in connection with the assault.

‘No discretion’

Several businesses around Mullingar have suffered losses at the hands of shoplifters in the last week.

Gardaí say that while the majority of the items were taken are of low value, that is under €20, they will be prosecuting anyone identified as having been responsible for any of the thefts.

“Any offenders detected will be prosecuted: there’s no discretion in relation to that,” a garda spokesperson said.

Car thefts

Property to the value of around €20 was stolen in a break-in to a car at 3am on Friday, according to a report filed with An Garda Síochána.
