Man (70s) receives treatment after aggravated burglary

Gardai in Athlone are investigating a traumatic aggravated burglary at a house in the Cornamaddy area in the early hours of Saturday morning, which left a man in his 70s receiving hospital treatment.

The victim was brought to hospital with minor physical injuries after the incident, which took place around 3.30am.

Two people entered the house, ransacked the property and left with a small amount of cash in the incident, which Gardai believe may have continued over some time.

Gardai say the elderly man suffered a traumatic and frightening experience and is currently in hospital for observation.

Scene of crime investigators are currently conducting a forensic examination.

Gardai Athlone have issued a public appeal for information.

Anyone who was in the Cornamaddy to Ballykeeran area of Athlone between the hours of 2am and 6am and who may have seen suspicious activity involving people either on foot or in vehicles to make contact with them.

Gardai are also asking motorists and taxi drivers who were in the area and who may have information to come forward.

Anyone with dashcam footage who was in the area between 2am and 6am is particularly asked to contact Gardai.
