Record entry for Mullingar Tennis Senior Open tournament

Mullingar Tennis Club had a record entry for the Senior Open Week which commenced on September 3 and concluded the following Sunday 10 with the finals. Not only was there a record entry, but the sun shone all week with temperatures reaching 26c.

The players come from as far away as Sligo, Nenagh, Dublin and all places in between. In the Ladies A Singles, Noor Elamin was the finalist against a very strong Emily O’Beirne from Trim.

The Ladies B singles final was hotly contested with Catherine Walsh and Alaine Clarke who played for almost three hours to decide the winner, with Catherine victorious in the end: score 4/6; 6/0; 7/6. This event had the longest matches as the Mullingar ladies in the event all played three set matches.

The ladies Doubles C was a Mullingar final with Alaine Clarke and Tammy Duffy winning in a very close game against Ariunaa Baasandorj and Noor Elamin. The men’s B doubles was between Peter Agbanobi with Ronan Flanagan (Athlone) and Brendan Corcoran and Colm Murphy (Mullingar) with the Athlone pairing winning in 3 sets, 6/7; 6/4; 12/10 in the championship tie break.

Colm and Olive Murphy were runners-up in the Mixed B Doubles. The ladies C singles was won by Clare Corbally in straight sets against Sarah Kavanagh, both from Mullingar. Sarah and Clare played together to win the ladies C doubles again Ariunaa Basdandorj and Olive McDonagh.

In the Mixed C Doubles, Will and Sarah Kavanagh played three three-set matches to reach the final where they were defeated by Isaac Del Saz Maestro and Lola Palos Fernandez (Cavan)in straight sets.

There is one final still to be played Men’s C Singles between Jeff Nea (Mullingar) and Shane Palfreyman (Tullamore). Prizes were presented by club president, Guillaume Dupuis and Eleanor McArdle, vice-president, who thanked our sponsors Annebrook Hotel, Buckley’s SuperValu and Christy Coyne & Sons Ltd., Agricultural Services.

A big thank you to all who helped with the catering during the week and with the BBQ on the Friday evening and those who assisted in any other way.

Coaching

Fergus Murphy is busy with the coaching and is offering cardio tennis on Wednesday evening and Friday mornings.

Cardio tennis is for adult players who want to combine fitness with tennis. It is a fun, social, fitness class with tennis open to all abilities. Don’t forget the great music to keep motivated.
