Drumraney take on Raharney in camogie semi-final
On this Wednesday night, October 4 in Kinnegad, under lights at 8pm, Drumraney and Raharney contest the first of the semi-finals of the Westmeath senior camogie championship. A novel pairing in a novel setting for a semi-final.
Raharney waltzed through their group to reach the semi-final stages, which for them has become an annual event in recent times. Their group consisted of themselves, Lough Lene Gaels, who also qualified for the semi-finals, Delvin and St Brigid’s.
Drumraney’s group included Clonkill, Crookedwood, Cullion and Castletown Geoghegan. This was a much more competitive group with Clonkill topping the group and Drumraney taking second spot and earning the unenviable task of talking on the current champions Raharney and serial winners of the senior championship, in one semi-final. The other semi-final between Clonkill and Lough Lene Gaels takes place this coming weekend.
Drumraney are not without hope though and will not be just there to fulfil a fixture. After winning the junior vhampionship in 2020, they went on to qualify for the senior semi-finals the following year.
Last year, under new management, Drumranewy reached the final of the B senior championship and followed that up by winning the senior league earlier this year. But it would be a major shock if Drumraney, under their very committed manager Cyril Crosbie and his management team, were to lower the colours of Raharney, who are managed ny Nick Weir.
It must be remembered that Raharney won the All-Ireland junior club championship in 2020 and theur players have backboned the Westmeath county team that reached the All-Ireland Intermediate Championship semi-final this year.
