Dolan returns for second Westmeath term
It was confirmed at this evening's County Committee meeting that Dessie Dolan will return as Westmeath senior football manager next year for what will be his second season at the helm.
Dolan, who previously served as a selector under Jack Cooney, took up the reins this year and oversaw what could be described as a mixed season. The team performed poorly in the league and failed to win promotion from division 3. In the Leinster championship, they exited at the first round, losing to Mickey Harte’s Louth side.
Westmeath then went on to produce three very encouraging displays against Armagh, Galway and Tyrone in the All-Ireland series. They narrowly lost their first two games and then drew with Tyrone (0-18 apiece), only failing to get the victory when John Heslin missed a late free in Kingspan Breffni Park.
Dolan’s backroom team has yet to be confirmed and there is speculation that there may well be changes to this year’s set-up. Former Dublin star Jason Sherlock worked as a coach under Dolan, but it could not be confirmed if he is returning for the 2024 season.
Former double winning All Star John Keane also worked as a coach and selector under Dolan this season.
Westmeath GAA chairman, Frank Mescall informed club delegates at this evening's meeting in the Mullingar Park Hotel that Dolan will finalise his backroom team in due course.
Dolan was ratified on the proposition of Peter O‘Halloran (Garrycastle), seconded by JP Reynolds (Bunbrosna).
Meanwhile, Westmeath GAA is expected to generate approximately €150,000 from its upcoming Quid Game event in the Mullingar Park Hotel, making it the most successful fundraiser in the county's history.
