Fundraising for Mullingar Order of Malta begins
The Order of Malta Unit in Mullingar have been chosen for the Tesco Community Fund in the local store, on the Ashe Road. The campaign started on November 27 and runs for 12 weeks.
Customers decide how their local Tesco Community Fund is shared by voting for their preferred causes when they’re shopping, by placing the blue token they receive at the checkout in the appropriate donation box .
Order of Malta unit members are asking for people to remember them when they are doing their weekly shopping in Tesco Mullingar.
The Tesco Community Fund was launched in July 2014, to support local good causes at each of the 166 stores in Ireland. Every 12 weeks, each store donates up to €2,000 to three local good causes. The more tokens a cause gets, the larger share of the donation they receive.
The Mullingar Order of Malta Unit, active since 2001, is well known and respected through their medical cover at events and through providing patient transport throughout the midlands.
There have a Cadet Unit for 10-16-year-olds and the Senior Unit is for those aged 16 and over. Members are trained medical responders and practitioners and all responders are trained in-house.
A number of members are currently call takers and emergency dispatchers within the National Ambulance Service. Several that have gone on to forge careers as nurses, doctors, paramedics, EMTs or ECAs, in Ireland and the UK. (One has even gone on to be an actress in Hollywood – other members are taking some of the credit!)
The next intake for members is in January 2024 and those interested in joining should keep an eye on the Mullingar Order of Malta social media channels and local press for details, soon after Christmas.
The unit has been awarded Clár funding towards a new ambulance, and members will be doing additional fundraising during the year to raise the remainder of the money needed for the purchase.
