Sarah Curran’s first solo exhibition

Mullingar artist Sarah Curran launched her first solo exhibition, Mindful Expressions, in the atrium of the County Buildings in Mullingar last week.

On display was a collection of paintings featuring animals, landscapes, and the natural environment.

Former RTÉ northern editor Tommie Gorman (a friend of Sarah’s husband, Aaron Forde, who, like Tommie, is from Sligo) performed the official opening; and also in attendance was Westmeath arts officer Miriam Mulrennan, who said there was “thriving artistic talent” in the county.

“It is a pleasure to see Sarah Curran launch her exhibition of Mindful Expressions at the atrium here in Mullingar,” she said.

“We are delighted, in particular, to see artists choosing to develop their work and artistic profession within the county, and to offer artists a means of progressing in their careers.”

Ms Curran is a special needs assistant at St Finian’s College in Mullingar. She said painting is useful in her line of work. “When you’re working with kids who have special needs, you can really incorporate art into your work.

“It’s really good for certain children as a form of meditation and mindfulness, and just in terms of expressing themselves too.

The artist said she was thrilled with the response to her exhibition. “It was successful and I really enjoyed it, especially as I had never done a solo exhibition before. I had painted with the Brosna Art Group for years but after doing a solo exhibition, I can tell you it’s a lot of work.”

Ms Curran said she hoped it would not be her last. “For me, it’s a big milestone being able to create my own art exhibition, so hopefully there will be more to come in the future,” she said.

Mindful Expressions is on display in the atrium of the County Buildings in Mullingar until January 15.
