Granard couple die in suspected carbon monoxide poisoning
Their bodies were discovered at the house in Killasonna, 5km outside Granard, on Saturday evening.
A couple in their 60s, who died of suspected carbon monoxide poisoning at a house in north Longford over the weekend, have been named locally as Paul and Morag Kavanagh.
Their bodies were discovered at the house in Killasonna, 5km outside Granard, on Saturday evening.
The Kavanaghs were living in the area for over 25 years and leave behind two adult children. Local Fianna Fáil Councillor, P.J. Reilly, says there is a deep sense of shock and sadness in the locality following the deaths.
He expressed his sympathy on behalf of the whole community to the family and described the incident as “tragic”.
“There is a real sense of shock in Granard over what has happened,” he said.
“The Kavanaghs were well known and very respected in the area, and their children attended Killasonna National School. Our sympathy is with the family at this very sad time.”
Cllr Reilly went on to say that carbon monoxide was a “silent killer” and advised people across the region to install appropriate monitors or alarms in their homes.
Meanwhile, Gardaí have confirmed that no criminal investigation is being pursued and a file is now being prepared for the Coroner’s Court. Investigations continue into the tragic incident.
