Big batch of players flying flag for Westmeath in Sigerson Cup

Twenty-three Westmeath players are participating in this year's Sigerson Cup, which kicked off yesterday evening (Tuesday).

County champions St Loman's Mullingar have three players playing in the premier third level football competition: Andrew Daly, Danny McCartan (both TUD) and Fionn O'Hara (Queen's University Belfast). 2023 beaten county finalists Coralstown/Kinnegad have four players: Brían Cooney, Jack Torpey, Shane Fleming (all TUS Midlands, Athlone) and Seán Martin, who is a member of the NUI Maynooth squad.

The Downs also have four players lining out for their colleges: Charlie Drumm and Jonathan Lynam (both UCD), Kevin O'Sullivan (Maynooth) and Liam Faulkner (ATU Sligo).

In last night's matches, Kevin O'Sullivan scored 1-2 in Maynooth University's 4-11 to 2-9 victory over MTU Cork. Shandonagh's Danny Scahill and Killucan's Seán Leech also started the match for Maynooth.

TUS Midlands take on SETU Carlow in their Sigerson Cup first round game tonight (Wednesday), January 10 (throw-in 7pm).

Caulry's Senan Baker scored a second half point for DCU in their one point defeat to Queens.

In Dangan, Danny McCartan, who made his senior inter-county debut at the weekend in Longford, was introduced from the bench to play his part in TUD's statement making 2-8 to 1-10 victory over a highly fancied University of Galway side.
