There were 100 teams in the North Midlands Credit Union Primary Schools Quiz, one of the biggest events in their calendar, this year, and "it was fantastic to have it back for another year and also see the huge turnout of students, parents, and teachers".
As there are now 72 primary schools in the common bond area, and due to space constraints in venues, it was necessary to hold two quizzes on two different nights, a spokesperson for North Midlands Credit Union said.
The quizzes were on Friday January 26 in Longford and on Monday January 29 in the Mullingar Park Hotel.
There 32 schools in the Mullingar one, who entered 62 teams and 248 students. There were two categories – Competition A for under 11 years and Competition B under 13 years of age. The quiz was to a high standard with all schools doing well.
Gaelscoil An Mhuilinn won Competition A; second place was St Mary’s NS, Raharney; and third place was Scoil Chroi Naofa, Rochfortbridge. Scoil Chroi Naofa, Rochfortbridge, won Competition B; second was St Patrick’s, Ballinagore; and third place was St Colman’s NS.
At the Longford quiz, there were 152 students from 22 schools, who made up 38 teams. St Mary’s Primary School, Edgeworthstown, won Competition A; second was Melview NS, Longford, and in joint third place were Scoil Mhuire, Newtownforbes and Colehill NS.
In Competition B, St Mary’s Primary School, Edgeworthstown, was first, second was Stonepark NS and in joint third place were Colehill NS, St Teresa NS, Killoe, and Whitehall NS.
The winners of Competition A and B in both quizzes progress to the next round, representing North Midlands Credit Union in the hope of making it to the all-Ireland national final.
The credit union spokesperson offered "a big thanks to all the parents and teachers for their continued support, and to the staff of North Midlands Credit Union for making the event a success".
