Supporting the Respect of the Game initiative

Mullingar Rugby Club had an awesome weekend from 2 to 4 February, all thanks to the ‘Respect of Game’ campaign by the Irish Rugby Football Union (IRFU). The goal? To remind everyone about the core values of rugby, especially the big one – RESPECT.

Club president, Conall Fitzgerald, shared why this weekend was so important: “At Mullingar Rugby Club, we believe our success is not just about winning games; it’s about everyone having a good time and feeling respected, both on and off the field.”

Did you know that some people quit sports because they don’t feel like they belong or they’re not having fun any more? The IRFU found that 55% of players, 43% of coaches, and 47% of referees thought that bad behaviour on the sidelines made them question being part of the game.

So, Mullingar Rugby Club got involved in activities to show that we care about respect. We gave out fair play awards at adult games and kept it positive and quiet on the sidelines during youth games. We even had talks with parents and coaches about how they play a big role in making rugby awesome.

The IRFU appreciated our efforts and gave us cool Respect Our Game Branded rugby balls, prizes, and other goodies to spread the message of respect.

Club president Conall Fitzgerald summed it up: “Our club’s success is not just about winning games – it’s about being good people, on and off the field. The ‘Respect of Game’ campaign fits perfectly with what we believe in – making rugby fun and respectful for everyone.”

Mullingar Rugby Club are showing that winning with respect is the real victory. We’re not just a team; we’re a family that believes in playing hard, having fun, and respecting each other.”

Leinster visit

Mullingar Rugby Football Club are buzzing with excitement as they prepare to host a live training session for the esteemed Leinster Rugby squad. This much-anticipated event is part of the Leinster Rugby ‘12 County Tour’ which sees Leo Cullen’s team visiting the counties around the province as part of their training schedule over the season.

The open session in Mullingar RFC is set for Monday February 12, from 2.30pm to 4pm, and is open to the entire community, not just club members.

Club president Conall Fitzgerald expressed his enthusiasm: “Leinster have been very accommodating in hosting their open training session at a time that allows maximum participation. We’re keenly aware that not all kids have the midterm off, so a 2.30pm start ensures that as many local rugby fans as possible can watch their heroes train.”
