Revenue seize drugs worth over €5,000 while examining parcels in Athlone
Revenue officers recently seized contraband worth approximately €5,100 as a result of risk profiling examining parcels at a premises in Athlone.
The revenue officers seized 254.8 grammes of synthetic cannabinoids during the operation. Synthetic cannabinoids refer to a class of lab-made substances that are chemically similar to chemicals found in the cannabis plant, though they often produce very different effects
The illicit drugs were discovered inside consignments declared as various items such as bath towels, pillows, clothing and food, and were discovered in parcels originating from the Netherlands, Spain, USA, Thailand and Indonesia, and were destined for addresses in Cork, Donegal, Dublin, Kildare, Limerick and Wexford.
Revenue officers based at Shannon Airport also seized herbal cannabis with an estimated value of €15,000 and parcels in Dublin of herbal cannabis, cannabis resin and cannabis edibles worth over €319,000.
Investigations into all of these seizures are ongoing.
